Does homeowners insurance cover hail damage to my roof?
Usually, yes. Most homeowners policies cover sudden storm damage like hail. But many Texas policies carry a separate wind and hail deductible, often figured as a percentage of your home's coverage rather than a flat dollar amount.
Check your wind and hail deductible first
If your policy uses a percentage deductible, the amount you pay comes from your home's insured value, not the size of the repair. On a higher-value home, that can be a large number. Find it on your declarations page before you file, so you know whether the damage is likely to cost more than you'd pay out of pocket.
Replacement cost or actual cash value
Some policies pay the full cost to replace a damaged roof. Others pay its actual cash value, which subtracts for age and wear, so an older roof may pay out less. Your policy says which applies to your roof.
What to do after a hailstorm
- Photograph damage you can see safely from the ground: dented gutters, downspouts, vents, and any shingle pieces in the yard.
- Stay off the roof. Let a roofer or an adjuster inspect it.
- Have a local roofer inspect and write up any damage before you decide whether to file.
- Be wary of door-to-door contractors who show up right after a storm, pressure you to sign on the spot, or ask for full payment up front.
Every policy is different, so your agent or insurance company has the final word on what yours covers.
