How much does it cost to repaint a car?
There's no single price. The cost depends on the size of the vehicle, how much prep work the body needs, and the paint and finish you choose. The only way to know is a written estimate for your car.
What drives the price
- Size of the vehicle. A truck or SUV has more surface to prep and paint than a compact car.
- Prep work. Dents, rust, peeling clear coat and old paint all have to be dealt with before new paint goes on. This is often the biggest difference between quotes.
- Paint and finish. The type of paint, the number of coats, and whether you're keeping the same color or changing it all affect the price. Changing colors usually means painting areas like door jambs that a same-color job can skip.
- How much of the car. A single panel or bumper costs far less than a full repaint.
Questions to ask any shop
- What prep is included, and what would cost extra?
- How many coats of color and clear coat go on?
- Are you painting the door jambs and under the hood, or only the outside?
- What does the warranty cover, and for how long?
- How long will you have the car?
Comparing written estimates line by line, instead of just the bottom number, is the easiest way to see why one shop's price differs from another's.
