What fall does to your roof and foundation, what to ask a body shop about newer cars, and what's happening around town through mid-December.
From the editor
Fall in North Texas brings two kinds of questions. Homeowners want to know what all those leaves are doing to their gutters, their roofs and the clay soil under the house. Drivers with newer cars want to know whether any shop can fix them, now that so many have cameras, radar and, for some, a high-voltage battery.
This issue answers both, with help from local business owners who deal with these questions every day. It's also the start of giving season, and we've rounded up local nonprofits that could use your help. You'll also find a busy calendar: Veterans Day, the Sheriff's Posse Round-Up, the State of the City and a stack of new businesses opening their doors.
Rockwall County has 13 polling locations open today, Tuesday, November 3, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Find yours, see a sample ballot, or call the Elections Office at (972) 204-6200.

Usually one of two things: the shop's technicians keep up ongoing industry training, or a carmaker has approved the shop to repair its vehicles. Ask which one, and check it yourself.

Leaves clog gutters and hold moisture on the roof. In North Texas, overflowing gutters can also dump water against your foundation, where expansive clay soil swells and shrinks. A fall cleanout helps protect both.

Often, yes. Cameras and radar behind the windshield and in the bumpers can be thrown off by a wreck or a repair. If your car has driver-assist features, ask whether calibration is part of the repair.

Not always. EVs carry high-voltage batteries that have to be handled safely, and repairs should follow the carmaker's procedures. Ask a shop about its EV experience before you drop off the car.
